The rookie goalie Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 37 shots for his first shutout, and Pavel Zacha scored a short-handed goal as the Devils beat the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-0, on Saturday at Prudential Center in Newark.
It was the second straight victory for Blackwood, giving the Devils their first two-game winning streak since Nov. 13 to 15. Andy Greene added an empty-netter to seal the win.
Curtis McElhinney made 28 saves for the Hurricanes, who have lost four of their last five.
Zacha broke a scoreless deadlock with 36 seconds left in the second period. He poked the puck away from Carolina’s Justin Faulk and sped into the Hurricanes’ zone. McElhinney made the initial stop, and Zacha stayed with the play to collar the rebound and flip it into the net.
Carolina pressed for the equalizer in the third but could not beat Blackwood. He stopped Sebastian Aho with a pad save with about six minutes left, preserving the shutout.
Teuvo Teravainen seemed to have netted the tying goal with 1 minute 58 seconds left, only for the goal to be waved off for accidental goalie interference. The Hurricanes appealed the call, which was upheld by the video review.
Hurricanes outshot the Devils by 13-9 in the first period, with most shots coming from the point or the perimeter. In the final seconds, Teravainen had one of the few good in-close chances, only to be denied by Blackwood.
Both teams were missing important forwards. The Devils’ Taylor Hall, last season’s Hart Trophy winner, sat out a second straight game with a lower-body injury. Carolina’s Jordan Staal was sidelined for a third game with an upper-body injury.
RANGERS 4, PREDATORS 3 Jesper Fast scored two goals, including the winner, and added an assist as the Rangers ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over the Predators in Nashville on Saturday night.
Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, Marc Stall added a score, and Mika Zibanejad had a career-high four assists for the Rangers, who earned their first road win in regulation this season. Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves.
Nick Bonino scored two power-play goals, and Kevin Fiala also scored and had two assists for the Predators, who have lost six straight. Pekka Rinne made 18 saves.
The Rangers were trailing by 3-2 entering the third, but Staal and Fast scored in a span of just over three minutes early in the period, giving the Rangers the lead.
ISLANDERS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 0 Mathew Barzal scored a natural hat trick in the second period, Valtteri Filppula had a highlight-reel goal, and the Islanders beat host Toronto in their first game against their former captain John Tavares, who signed with the Leafs as a free agent in July.
The Islanders have won six of seven. Robin Lehner made 36 saves for his second shutout of the season, and Ryan Pulock had two assists. Garret Sparks stopped 24 shots as Toronto ended its five-game winning streak.
