To the Editor:

Re “President Hails New Trade Pact as Promise Kept” (front page, Oct. 2):

By all accounts the tweaking of Nafta, now to be called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement so President Trump can claim credit, doesn’t significantly change the previous trade deal. And for Canadians that stability is exactly what our businesses and workers were hoping for.

However, Mr. Trump’s aspersions against Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau (whom he called “very dishonest and weak” at June’s G-7 summit), and foreign minister reveal a pettiness and a profound ignorance of how to treat a neighbor that has repeatedly demonstrated good will and support of the United States.

Contrary to Mr. Trump’s credo, not everything in life can be reduced to winners and losers. Perhaps we could include in the trade deal a pair of tickets to the Broadway musical “Come From Away,” which recounts how the people of Gander, Newfoundland, welcomed into homes and shelters thousands of American airline passengers who were grounded on Sept. 11, 2001.

Mr. Trump’s supporters should consider whether allies that have been continually denigrated will be willing to come to America’s aid in the future when they are needed.
